Message of the day - April 28, 1997:

Hi everyone,

Here are more images from Russ Colegrove. He is a train show dealer, and I occasionally see him at major Texas area train shows. These slides are from my second purchase from him. I also got a couple dozen late 70's FRISCO slides, taken before the merger renumbering. I'm considering whether I want to include such predecessor road equipment, and it seems appropriate. I have posted a couple shots of units in BN paint, but lettered for other roads, or at least off the roster (usually awaiting scrapping) at the time of the photo. The main reason I have not posted shots of predecessor equipment was that originally I had to draw the line somewhere, and 1970 was a very easy place to do that. Slides of BN predecessor equipment seem so hard to come by anyway. Seems any good ones have been scarfed up. I probably have less than a dozen slides of GN, CB&Q, NP, and SP&S equipment. I still think I'll only include predecessor equipment known to be on the roster after the BN merger. Perhaps I should put this in the contribute page....

Getting back to the topic of today's images, there are a couple interesting images to point out. Russ conveniently had two shots of BN 602 - both of them. I have not had this occur too often, but I suppose I should begin using the usual notation denoting reuse of a road number, and present these as F7A 602:1 and GP9B 602:2. I think I'll wait until my INDEX overhaul (see MOTD for April 8, second paragraph) to adopt this convention where appropriate on the INDEX and unit pages.

But wait, there's more! Attention to historical info has yielded not one, but two before and after rebuild shots! This time, we have GP35 #2560 / GP39E #2911 to compare as well as GP40 #3008 / GP40E #3553. The new paint is obvious - what else looks different? Now that I think of it, you may find the two shots of GP9 #1947. While it did not get redesignated as rebuilt, changes are probably more drastic than in the case of the GP40 rebuild. Here are shots before and after it had it's nose chopped and a new coat of paint applied.

Pretty interesting day...too interesting perhaps, as it's now almost an hour into April 29th - posting took a little longer than I thought it would tonight! Oh well....
