Hi everyone, Here are more slides from new contributor, Bill Weibel. Bill sent nearly 400 BN slides for me to pick through (I generally don't recommend sending so many at once, but I guess I should not complain...), and since I have scanned 320 of them, it will take the rest of this month and then some to post them all. Most of the slides in this collection are from the early eighties, so there are several shots of units no longer on the roster, and several ex-Frisco units still in Frisco colors but with BN lettering and number. Tonight we have a couple particularly interesting GP9's to look at. The first is GP9 #1961, which was BN's first experiment with natural gas as an alternative fuel. The second is GP9 #1965, which was modified with extra windows to accomodate extra crew members in the cab when railroads were first phasing out use of cabooses. Niether program was particularly successful, and in both cases these units were the only ones to recieve their respective experimental conversions. Interestingly, both units are still on the roster, GP9 #1965 still sporting its modifications, and GP9 #1961 having been rebuilt to GP28P #1596. |
