Message of the day - February 20, 1997:

Hi everyone,

Today is the third of 12 days of nothing but SD40-2's.

For those of you who don't have much concern for detail, the next few days may seem a bit boring. For those of you who are particularly interested in details, this will be a good opportunity to see just how many differences there are among BN's many SD40-2's. I believe in every case, you'll find it's more than just the number on the side that is different!

For those of you who are interested in what all these differences are, but have not had much practice at spotting them yet, here are a few examples. This time I'll point out a few differences between shots of the same units at different times.

Note BN 7122 on 8/5/96 and on an unknown date. What are the differences? Several! First, it lost the beacon; second, it gained an American flag decal; third, the horn has been moved; and fourth, there are a few minor decal and lettering differences.

Next is BN 7128 on 3/26/94 and on 3/2/96. This time there are two differences. Check the ditch lights and also note the SD40-2 lettering on the frame sill.

Then check BN 7147 on 8/91 and on 6/20/82. In this case, there are again two differences. The photos show that 7147 has lost its rotary beacon, but now is LARS equipped. I'm sure that there may be more subtle differences, but I think you get the general idea.

Also note that in all of the above cases, the paint schemes (minus some minor decal and lettering differences) are the same! Such minor detail differences are often subtle, but they are nevertheless interesting. For that reason, I have found that it is often nice to have more than one image of a locomotive, particularly when taken a few years apart.

I hope today's efforts help you become more attentive to these details, and more proficeint at spotting them!
