Message of the day - August 19, 2002:

Hi everyone,

Four of today's five photos are more of the same, the fifth is SD40-2 #7870, which I have previously listed in my roster as BN's one and only SD40P, not to be confused with the SDP40. The reason for the SD40P designation is that this unit is equipped to power the only TEBUC6 "slugs" which are used almost exclusively in BN hump yards. In the case of 7870, Tulsa, OK has been its home since I first started paying attention to such things in 1995, when I took the other two photos of this unit.

I am not sure where I came up with the statement on the SD40P roster page that this unit is a rebuilt SD40, when it really is a modified SD40-2. The distinction between rebuilt and modified is not an exact science, but for now I have chosen to put the most recent photo of this unit with the rest of the SD40-2's. For anyone wishing to model the unit, a SD40 would not be a good starting point, but a SD40-2 would be. The original reason the SD40P designation was made was a BN computer system that only had five characters available to store the model name. That system also referred to the SD40-2 as a SD402 if I remember correctly, and was also the source of several other abbreviated names shown in some BN rosters.

Enjoy,
Charles
