The past year was a memorable one. This year's big trip was to visit my sister's new mother in law in Vancouver, BC. Mom and Dad were up for driving and enjoying the scenery, offering many opportunities from Texas to Montana to Beautiful British Columbia. First photo of that trip was an unexpected one in New Mexico, and I've selected it as "Photo of the Year". Despite the well known and planned for first class scenery in Glacier National Park, Montana, the scenes I captured at those locations would be much easier to repeat on another day or year to obtain a similar photo. I have never seen a photo with such a dramatic black sky backdrop from a large passing storm before, much less taken such a photo myself. I doubt I will ever be able to repeat that scene. Thankfully the hail was small and we did not encounter any tornados! That was quite a treat in addition to the several scenes I was after in Montana, where 13 of this year's 36 photos are from. Add 10 from other states and 13 more from Texas and that's a pretty nice balance and variety of scenery. Variety of motive power and paint schemes also abounds. On the return trip, the highlight was my first visit to Yellowstone National Park, another memorable experience. Perhaps next time I'll swing through California and Arizona on either the way out or way back and really have some variety. Might even try hiking across the Grand Canyon just to say I did. While it's not BNSF, a train does go there too. It's nice to have a good reason to drive all the way to Vancouver, BC which was quite scenic itself. Thanks Mom, Dad, Maria, Jeff and Sandi! Oh, and last but not least, one of this year's photos is not actually by me, but by my mother, Rosemary. She outdid me on this scene in Sandpoint, Idaho. Thanks again Mom! |
